The Young Basotho Designers Collection (YBDC) is an initiative by Aranda Textile Mills (the sole manufacturer of authentic Basotho heritage blankets).
The collection is significant because it:
Empowers Young Basotho Designers: It provides a platform for young, talented designers of Basotho origin to create and showcase new blanket designs.
Keeps Tradition Alive: The initiative ensures the rich blanket-wearing tradition, which is integral to Basotho culture, evolves authentically by Basotho people, for Basotho people.
Features New Designs: The blankets in this collection feature new motifs and colour combinations while maintaining visual connections to historic Basotho design principles and symbols (like the mokorotlo hat or the corncob).
Cultural Significance: Like all Basotho blankets, these new designs weave new stories and honour elements of Basotho culture, such as the resilience of women or the importance of cattle.
The collection was first launched in recent years (around 2022) to introduce modern interpretations to the iconic heritage brand.
